Thrikkakara municipal hospital plans expansion

The Thrikkakara Municipal Cooperative Hospital, set up nearly 20 years ago, has been in the forefront of affordable healthcare in the cooperative sector. The Thrikkakara Municipal Cooperative Hospital is planning to expand its operations to include departments like trauma care and casualty, gastroenterology, cardiology, neurology and burns care. Hospital sources said that the present hospital campus had severe space constraints. The complex was built partially with financial support under the CSR initiative of Petronet LNG Limited, hospital sources added. It also provides ayurvedic care, hospital sources added.

A proposal has been submitted to the State government for the allotment of around 40 cents of land on the eastern side of the present building for a five-storey structure. The expenses for the project will be met partially by loans from the cooperative sector as well as contributions from supporters and well-wishers, hospital sources said. The hospital, set up nearly 20 years ago, has been in the forefront of affordable healthcare in the cooperative sector. Besides that, the hospital authorities have been focussing on promoting healthy food production and sustainable waste management. Their activities include promotion of organic farming of vegetables and fruits and sustainable waste management in the municipal area. The hospital has developed into a major healthcare facility in Thrikkakara with 30 doctors, 110 paramedical staff as well as departments like general medicine, surgery, gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ENT, dermatology, and ophthalmology. It also provides ayurvedic care, hospital sources added. At present, the hospital has 75 beds and around 400 outpatients visit the hospital daily. Hospital sources said that the present hospital campus had severe space constraints. The services were shifted to the present premises on Seaport-Airport Road after the State government allotted it 60 cents of land in 2010. The complex was built partially with financial support under the CSR initiative of Petronet LNG Limited, hospital sources added. The new trauma care and casualty section was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in August last year.
