more-in Schools are chalking out plans to compensate for the working days lost owing to the heavy rain that lashed the district since last week. Schedules have been affected, especially after schools remained closed for consecutive days following heavy rain and wind. Many schools had postponed their class and unit tests ahead of the Onam vacation to next week. Principal of a CBSE school pointed out that it might be difficult to compensate all the classes, which got lost owing to the long holidays. “However, we are trying our best to make up for the lost sessions.” A few parents said that they had already received messages from school authorities saying that the Onam vacation days had been curtailed. The messages said that there would be only six to eight days of Onam holidays this time, they said. However, T.P. Ibrahim Khan, president of the Kerala CBSE Schools Management Association, said that the mandatory holidays during such occasions had to be given. It could not be cut down in the name of the lost days owing to rain, he said. With District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla pointing out that school managements could fix the days in which the lost days would be compensated, many schools have already informed parents that schools will be functioning on coming Saturdays that include July 21 and 28. The Deputy Director of Education, Ernakulam, has been asked to fix the dates for schools coming under his jurisdiction. Mr. Khan requested the Central Board of Secondary Education and State authorities not to issue directives restricting conduct of special classes during vacation time, especially in view of the increasing number of holidays due to unexpected reasons. He said that schools had to achieve the mandatory working days.
