Authorities seek Good Samaritans’ help

District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla said in an audio message that counters would remain open at the Regional Sports Centre (RSC), Kadavanthra, where members of the public and representatives of various organisations could hand over relief materials and other essential items. “Besides supporting flood-affected people in Ernakulam, we are helping those in Idukki, Wayanad and Palakkad districts through the respective Collectors,” he said. He also urged them to continue extending help to the needy. Volunteers of Anbodu Kochi, a social media collective formed to help the victims of the massive Chennai floods in 2015, are actively assisting the district administration in relief operations. They are coordinating the collection process at RSC counters. The drive is led by Mr. Safirulla and Mr. M.G. Rajamanickam, former District Collector and now Food Safety Commissioner. Actors Poornima Indrajith, Parvathy, Remya Nambeesan, and Rima Kallingal were among the volunteers who extended help in coordinating the collection process. For the record, Anbodu Kochi volunteers had worked with then District Collector M.G. Rajamanickam during the Chennai floods. They had provided 25 truckloads of relief materials to the flood-affected people. They had managed to collect 250 tonnes of essentials, including medicines, within two weeks in a massive exercise involving around 4,000 volunteers. They also coordinated the supply of relief materials to the flood-hit people in Kuttanad recently. Vimal, an Anbodu Kochi volunteer, said that commodities like rice, sugar, tea powder, tur dal, chickpea, salt, drinking water (20-litre bottle); Dettol, anti-septic lotions, soap, paste, bleaching powder, sanitary napkins, adult diapers, oral rehydration solutions, schoolbags, notebooks, pencil boxes, pens, bedsheets, blankets, and essential medicines were needed.
