Floods hit lottery business too as state scraps 5.52 crore tickets

The state had to scrap 5.52 crore lottery tickets of various lucky draws it had printed after the draws scheduled from August 23-29 were cancelled as ticket sales were badly hit by the unprecedented floods. KOZHIKODE: The deluge has hit Kerala’s Rs 9,000-crore annual luck-peddling lottery business too. Add to that the crores of rupees it would have brought to the state exchequer as profits. The slump in lottery sales is likely to make an impact in the sector that saw Rs 1,695-crore profits in 2017-18.“We cancelled six lotteries and postponed draws of seven others as ticket sales in state were badly hit due to floods.,” publicity officer Anil Bhasker said. On a normal day, the state sells around 96 lakh lottery tickets.The directorate had postponed draws of seven lotteries scheduled from August 16-22 after agents complained that the ticket sales had almost came to a halt due to floods.

The draws of these lotteries will be held from August 23- 29.Officials at the directorate of lotteries said the government had incurred a printing cost loss of over Rs 2.6 crore in case of cancelled tickets. Add to that the crores of rupees it would have brought to the state exchequer as profits. The slump in lottery sales is likely to make an impact in the sector that saw Rs 1,695-crore profits in 2017-18.“We cancelled six lotteries and postponed draws of seven others as ticket sales in state were badly hit due to floods.,” publicity officer Anil Bhasker said.
