Youth crushed under crane in freak accident

Advaith, 21, his friend and a resident of Aroor, was admitted with injuries at a private hospital in the city. The crane, which belonged to a private firm, was coming down from the North railway overbridge. Riyas, a resident of Kandekatt House, Ernamalloor, was rushed to Ernakulam General Hospital and later to a private hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A 21-year-old youth got crushed under the wheels of a moving crane descending the North railway overbridge on Thursday night after it lost control and veered towards a nearby petrol pump where the victim was waiting to fill petrol in his two-wheeler. The Central Police said that Anurag, driver of the crane, from Uttar Pradesh was arrested in connection with the incident.

A case has been registered under 304A IPC (causing death due to rash and negligent driving). The police said that the incident occurred around 10.30 p.m. The crane, which belonged to a private firm, was coming down from the North railway overbridge. Eyewitnesses said that they heard a loud sound and found the youth under the crane’s wheel. It was all over in a flash, said people who were having food at a nearby hotel. A major accident was averted as a few others who had turned up to fill petrol ran away seeing the speeding vehicle. Ernakulam RTO Joji P. Jose said that the licence of the crane driver would be suspended for one year based on the first information report. A motor vehicle inspector has been asked to conduct an inquiry into the incident and submit a report.
