THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With Supreme Court ordering a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for wrongful arrest, after 24 years of legal battle Nambi Narayanan is yearning for a peaceful life that closure brings to victims of persecution. But his conscience is not allowing him to sit back. Narayanan wants to see the three police officers who fabricated the case against him punished.“I had appealed for the punishment of the three police officers. I never asked for the compensation. I wanted a CBI inquiry against the officers but the court has appointed a judicial committee now. We do not get what we ask for every time. But I am happy with the verdict,’’ said Narayanan sitting at his house in Thiruvananthapuram soon after the television channels flashed the verdict from New Delhi.Pinning the blame squarely on Sibi Mathews, the DIG of police who led the special investigation team, Narayanan said no police officer should go free after torturing a person like this mentally and physically.“It was Sibi Mathews who brought this case to this level,’’ Narayanan said fuming at the police officer for accusing him of siphoning off state secrets.“I am happy with the verdict, which is better than the earlier. If it is a fabricated case, and you are implicated, then you should fight against it,” said Narayanan.A judicial committee headed by retired SC Judge D K Jain will inquire into the role of police officers, but Narayanan has apprehensions regarding the time frame of the inquiry.“If there are enough powers given to the judicial committee and if they are going to submit the report to court, then it matters. The police officers who fabricated this case should be punished. Till date no police officers have been punished for illegal arrest or custodial torture. The notion that they can do anything and escape has changed with this verdict. In that way I will say this verdict is a historic verdict,’’ said Nambi Narayanan.
