Bishop Franco Mulakkal writes to Pope Francis

Bishop Mulakkal has been summoned for questioning by Kerala Police on September 19 and is expected to stay put here for several days. KOTTAYAM: Jalandhar bishop Franco Mulakkal has written to Pope Francis seeking his permission to step aside temporarily from administrative responsibilities of his diocese since he will be busy defending the rape charge against him by a nun belonging to Missionaries of Jesus. He is confident that his request will be accepted by Vatican,” said Fr Peter Kavumpuram, PRO of Jalandhar diocese. Earlier, in a circular issued on September 13, the bishop announced the handing over charge of the diocese’s administration to Fr Mathew Kokkandam.Mulakkal was earlier quizzed for around nine hours by a Kerala Police team during the intervening night of August 13 and 14 at Bishop House in Jalandhar. There is the possibility that he might even be arrested.In a letter written on September 16 and handed over to Apostolic Nuncio, representative of the Pope in India, Mulakkal expressed his wish to step aside since he will have to spend a lot of time in connection with the case and will have to travel to Kerala several times.“The bishop decided on his own to make this request to the Pope.
