Withdrawal of protest only temporary: nuns

A spokesman for the action committee said that the withdrawal of the protest was not permanent and if there was a need, the public action would be relaunched with renewed vigour. Sister Anupama and Sister Emelda, who have been part of the protest action here said that they thanked the innumerable number of people who had come in support of them. She said that it was the massive protest that put pressure on the authorities to arrest the bishop even if it was late.

Confusion, anxiety The early afternoon hours on Friday saw anticipation and confusion among the protesters even as television news reports indicated that the bishop was arrested. There were shouts of joy as the news arrived. However, the venue of the protest went silent as it was announced that there was no confirmation about the bishop’s arrest. Sister Anupama and Sister Emelda, who have been part of the protest action here said that they thanked the innumerable number of people who had come in support of them. Sister Anupama said that the protest was not being withdrawn permanently and that it was for the larger body of women, who have been persecuted or abused. Father Augustine Vattoli, convenor of the action committee, said that the wait for the arrest of the bishop had been a long one but the protesters had been a patient lot. There were also scenes of celebrations with a group of protesters raising their fists in the air in signs of victory as television channels released the news of the bishop’s arrest after 6 p.m. Five women launched a 24-hour hunger strike on Friday and joined P.Geetha, writer and social activist, who has been on a hunger strike since Tuesday. Stephen Mathew, who has been on a hunger strike even after he was shifted to a hospital on Tuesday, joined the protesters with the news of the bishop’s arrest.
