District administration lists out losses

The Ernakulam district administration made a presentation on flood-induced losses before the Central team that surveyed the flood-hit parts of the district. The industrial sector suffered a loss of ?489.56 crore, excluding the loss suffered by the handloom industry. District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla gave details of the relief work carried out by the administration and the social auditing scheme introduced for ensuring that the relief reached the flood-affected sections to the visiting delegation. The agriculture sector suffered a loss of ?204 crore as farming in 3,234 hectares of land was damaged. Around ?60 crore was spent on search and rescue operations, while ?35.54 crore was spent on rehabilitation programmes.

Post-flood rescue operations saw 1,15,250 persons being brought to safety by various rescue teams. The flooding in the Periyar inundated Aluva and Paravur areas. The flood also witnessed 4.2 lakh people being shifted to relief camps. District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla gave details of the relief work carried out by the administration and the social auditing scheme introduced for ensuring that the relief reached the flood-affected sections to the visiting delegation. Around ?60 crore was spent on search and rescue operations, while ?35.54 crore was spent on rehabilitation programmes. Cleaning work was carried out in flood-affected areas at a cost of ?80.35 crore. The agriculture sector suffered a loss of ?204 crore as farming in 3,234 hectares of land was damaged. The Fisheries Department estimated a loss of ?33. 92 lakh. The floodwaters destroyed 96 fishing boats completely and 63 partially. Health sector The loss in the health sector was estimated to be to the tune of ?10,237.87 lakh. The industrial sector suffered a loss of ?489.56 crore, excluding the loss suffered by the handloom industry. The primary estimation of the loss caused by the floodwaters for houses in the district was about ?52,911.50 lakh. The comprehensive estimation of the damage the houses suffered was progressing. It was expected to be over on September 23, the administration informed the delegation.
