Project to help prevent spread of crop diseases

KOCHI: Against the backdrop of the recent floods, the agricultural development and farmers’ welfare department in the district plan to start a project to help farmers prevent spread of diseases in crops.According to officials, nutmeg , pepper and coconut are the major disease-prone crops in the district. Farmers in the district would be provided with free preventive medicines for crops,” said Asha Ravi, principal agricultural officer in the district.As an initial process, the department has given instructions to farmers on what should be done primarily to curb the spread of diseases.“We have completed awareness programmes about the rising threat of diseases, and have asked them to use necessary medicines,” said Asha.Though not many cases have been reported, officials expect spread of diseases, especially fungal and bacterial growth in crops.“Heavy rains that started in June along with majority of the cultivation got submerged during the floods, chances are high that there could be an increase in fungal infection in crops,” added Asha.Experts said that farmers in flood-affected areas need to be more careful about spread of diseases in crops.Crops that survived the floods, like plantain and paddy, have high chances of being infected by bacteria or fungus, said an expert in the field.Fungal infections have been reported in pepper and nutmeg plantations in areas near Angamaly Precautions like spraying bleaching powder solution to paddy and copper hydroxide treatment in nutmegs could help prevent fungal infections, said an official in the department.Due to hot climate in the district in the recent days, officials also warned that crops were likely to be affected with leaf wilting, mostly in areas where daily watering is not possible.
