The police have traced drugs, credit card data and fake passport dealings with Kerala connection in the darknet, said Manoj Abraham, Inspector General of Police, Nodal Officer, Cyberdome. The police have also traced transactions in fake Indian passports. Mr. Abraham said the quantum of credit card details available over the darknet indicates the possibility of databases of banks being hacked into though they may not admit it. Mr. Abraham warned that the darknet may become the feeding ground of criminal activities in the future owing to the safety cover it offers. He said that ‘credible’ sites in the darknet now offer the safest option for drug peddling both for the buyer and the seller.

more-in The police have traced drugs, credit card data and fake passport dealings with Kerala connection in the darknet, said Manoj Abraham, Inspector General of Police, Nodal Officer, Cyberdome. Closed networks Darknet, infamously dubbed as the underworld in cyberspace, comprises closed networks accessible to only select group of people and are not indexed by popular search engines. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the 11th edition of Cocon, a two-day international cyber conference that got under way here on Friday, Mr. Abraham said that Cyberdome is gearing up to infiltrate the darknet though shady dealings through it are already being monitored. He said that ‘credible’ sites in the darknet now offer the safest option for drug peddling both for the buyer and the seller. “The contraband is delivered by courier at the doorstep, leaving no traces of the seller, place of procurement and the cash flow. It eliminates the danger of being caught by getting involved in the conventional mode of transaction,” he said. Facebook monitoring The Cyberdome has also developed a tool to analyse the information from Facebook on a daily basis and has been using it for the past six months. It helps to make police arrangements in advance. Monitoring Facebook, which has now turned into an instant crowd-mobilising tool, can be very effective in maintaining law and order since it is a barometer in measuring the building up of resentment in society over various issues.
