Rainfall forecast toned down to Orange alert in Kerala district

MALAPPURAM: Though the red alert warning of extremely heavy rains is toned down to Orange alert for very heavy rains across the district, the district administration has asked the public to keep vigil against flash flood and landslides.According to latest alert issued by Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), Malappuram would be on Orange alert on Sunday and Monday and Yellow alert on Tuesday. It also says there would be light to moderate rainfall in the district on Wednesday.In view of heavy rainfall forecast, district collector Amit Meena has already asked people residing on the banks of rivers to be cautious. All tourist spots were closed and district administration has imposed a blanket ban on quarrying process in the district in view of heavy rain forecast. As pert the alert, the district administration is to be prepared of serious weather conditions with heavy rains and possibility of flooding in low lying areas.As per the forecast, there is possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in the district on Sunday and Monday and possibility of heavy rainfall on Tuesday. He also asked tribal promoters to alert tribal people who reside in calamity prone areas.Fisheries authorities in Ponnani also have issued alert in Ponnani harbor area.

Considering the warning of heavy rain, a round the clock control room was opened in Ponnani municipality. All tourist spots were closed and district administration has imposed a blanket ban on quarrying process in the district in view of heavy rain forecast.
