Customs seizes 700g gold from passenger at airport

KOCHI: Cochin customs air intelligence unit sleuths seized gold bars weighing 700g from a passenger who reached Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) on Saturday.Two bars and 17 pieces of gold were found concealed in the side cavity of a large stapler and a showpiece statue in the baggage of a Kozhikode resident, who reached Cial from Riyadh. The remanded are Haneef (37), a native of Haryana, and Nazeem (24), a Rajasthan native.Police will move the court again for the custody of the accused. He added that the customs was investigating kingpins behind the smuggling rackets and that they would be nabbed soon.Two accused in the twin ATM robbery at Tripunithura and Koratty have been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. While climbing down the roof for a tea break, a sheet he stepped on broke off and he fell through it, police said.Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to injuries. The customs detained the gold and arrested the smuggler.The commissioner of customs, Sumit Kumar, in the backdrop of the seizure urged employees of Cial, airline and ground-handling agencies and staff of other agencies working in the airport to provide information leading to seizures.The informers will be rewarded and their identity will be kept confidential, the commissioner said.

The accused looted the ATM at Irumbanam and decamped with Rs 25 lakh on October 11.A labourer fell to death while engaging in maintenance work at a godown at Eloor at 9.30am on Saturday.The deceased was identified as Basheer (51), a resident of Eloor.Basheer was repairing asbestos sheets of the godown. While climbing down the roof for a tea break, a sheet he stepped on broke off and he fell through it, police said.Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to injuries.
