Sabarimala: All-party meet fails to reach consensus on women's entry

The government made it clear that it was committed to implement the court verdict allowing women's entry in Sabarimala. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The all-party meeting convened by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to evolve a consensus in implementing the Supreme Court verdict allowing women's entry in Sabarimala temple failed. The chief minister in his opening speech itself made it clear that the government would ensure women entry. The government is ready to come out with necessary arrangements for the women's entry. There is no going back from this, Vijayan told the meeting.The Congress and BJP flayed the adamant stand taken by the chief minister.

The government made it clear that it was committed to implement the court verdict allowing women's entry in Sabarimala. There is no going back from this, Vijayan told the meeting.The Congress and BJP flayed the adamant stand taken by the chief minister. The Congress alleged that the government was not interested in ensuring peace at Sabarimala. "The all-party meeting was a farce," said opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala.While speaking to reporters after the meeting, the chief minister said, "Faith is not above the Constitution. The government has no other option before it but to abide by the court verdict. The government is ready to come out with necessary arrangements for the women's entry. But it cannot go back on implementing the court verdict.’’The chief minister said the government was ready to consider an option of allowing women into the hill shrine on particular days instead of allowing them every day. This was conveyed to the opposition parties in the all-party meet However, the opposition parties alleged that the government had come with pre-conceived notion that it was adamant on allowing women entry . "There was no need for the government to convene such a meeting. The chief minister in his opening speech itself made it clear that the government would ensure women entry. Then what is the point in having discussion," asked opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala.BJP state president P S Sreedhran Pillai said the government was in a haste in allowing women entry. The government is not ready to listen to the sentiments of the devotees and the believers. "The arrogant and adamant attitude of the government was evident in the meeting," he said.
