Cyclone Gaja brings heavy rains to central Kerala

Squally wind speed reaching 40-50kmph gusting to 60kmph is very likely along & off Kerala coast in the next 24 hours. Kozha (Kottayam) reported an extremely heavy rainfall of 28cm. Sea condition will be rough to very rough along and off Kerala coast during the period.IMD has suggested total suspension of fishing operations over Southeast Arabian Sea along and off Kerala coast. Heavy to very heavy rainfall was reported from Piravom (Ernakulam) - 19cm, Thodupuzha (Idukki) - 15cm, Cherthala (Alappuzha ) and Munnar (Idukki) - 12cm and Kumarakom (Kottayam) - 11cm, Idukki - 10cm, Vaikom (Kottayam) and Myladumpara (Idukki) - 9cm each, Kottayam - 8cm and Peermade (Idukki) - 7cm.Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea. Port areas are expected to see high waves in the range of 2.5-2.8 meters till 11.30pm on Sunday.Private weather forecaster Skymet reported a fall in morning temperatures in the state with thick cloud formations in many places.In the last 24 hours, Kottayam district received 79.3mm rainfall followed by Alappuzha - 43.4mm, Kochi - 42.3mm, Punalur - 6.2mm and Thiruvananthapuram - 2.8 mm.The cyclonic circulation could cause a decrease in rainfall after 48 hours.
