Cancer research centre to be built in two years

Minister Shailaja inaugurated the district cancer control programme at a function held at the medical college auditorium on Saturday. The strength of outpatients at the super specialty wing would be 600. It will be a four-storeyed structure with three basements and the construction would be completed by October 2020. The building, with an area of 77,500 square feet is being constructed at a cost of Rs 61.88 crore. Outpatient and inpatient strength of the CCRC would be at 500 and 252, respectively.

KOCHI: The Infrastructure Kerala Limited (Inkel), which has been preparing the design of the Cochin Cancer Research Centre (CCRC), has been forced to make some changes to its plan as the building’s front elevation was rejected by CCRC authorities.However, Inkel officials said that the construction project will not be hit by delay due to the changes suggested by the CCRC authorities.“We are going ahead with piling works. The work on the front elevation would be taken up only at a later stage. Hence, we will get adequate time for effecting changes in the design,” an official with Inkel said.The construction of the structure will be completed by October 2020, the officials said. At a review meeting attended by health minister K K Shailaja, Inkel officials said the procurement and installation of medical equipment would take some more time.The structure will have five floors plus three basements with a total built up area of 6.08 lakh square feet. Outpatient and inpatient strength of the CCRC would be at 500 and 252, respectively. The total bed strength will be 408 while there would 80 beds in the intensive care units.The super speciality block of the medical college being constructed at a cost of Rs 285 crore will have a total area of 8.27 lakh square feet. It will be a four-storeyed structure with three basements and the construction would be completed by October 2020. The strength of outpatients at the super specialty wing would be 600. Besides, 571 inpatients also can be accommodated at the super specialty wing.Inkel officials informed the minister that the construction of the four floors of the super specialty wing of the Ernakulam General Hospital has been completed.It has an outpatient strength of 250 and an inpatient strength of 88. The building, with an area of 77,500 square feet is being constructed at a cost of Rs 61.88 crore. The construction of the building would be completed by October 2020.
