To a further query on what about the other devotees, Kodiyeri said, "The police would check and set free innocent devotees". When asked how many of the arrested are RSS workers, Kodiyeri listed out the name of seven persons. "The RSS wants to usurp the control of Sabarimala temple which so far hasn't come under its grip. Do we need to allow them to have a free run or act tough to protect the interests of devotees? "That is what we saw in Thalassery when the fish market was attacked on Sunday.

THIRUVAN ANTHAPURAM: The available state secretariat of the CPM, which reviewed the situation in Sabarimala on Monday, extended all support to the steps taken by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan for weeding out troublesome elements from the hill shrine. The CPM gave its nod for the ongoing police operations with a rider that interests of the innocent devotees should be protected.CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the operations of RSS-BJP resembled the taking over of Golden Temple at Amritsar by Khalistan terrorists in the '80s. "The RSS wants to usurp the control of Sabarimala temple which so far hasn't come under its grip. For that they even use women and child devotees as human shields. They terrorise media organizations. They trouble officers who are discharging their duty by organizing protest marches to their residences. There was a march to the house of state police chief Loknath Behera in Odisha," Balakrishnan said.On the arrest of 69 devotees from Sannidhanam on Sunday night, the CPM secretary said those taken into custody were RSS-BJP functionaries. "They had not come for pilgrimage. Their aim was to play politics and disturb the serenity of Sabarimala," he said. When asked how many of the arrested are RSS workers, Kodiyeri listed out the name of seven persons. To a further query on what about the other devotees, Kodiyeri said, "The police would check and set free innocent devotees". However, the CPM state secretary was proved wrong when the police decided to slap cases against all the arrested and sent them to jail.Sources in the CPM said the state secretariat had no option than to support the government's action as the critical decisions had already been taken and executed. "The choices before the government are limited. What else can they do to rein in the hooligans? Do we need to allow them to have a free run or act tough to protect the interests of devotees?", a senior CPM leader said.Balakrishnan also alleged that BJP-RSS workers had begun attempts to create communal tensions in different parts of the state by attacking establishments run by a particular community. "That is what we saw in Thalassery when the fish market was attacked on Sunday. During Saturday's hartal, similar incidents were reported from Karunagappally and Sreekaryam," he said.On the criticism levelled by Union minister K J Alphons, Balakrishnan said Alphons should go back and ask Prime Minister Modi to promulgate an ordinance to circumvent the Supreme Court order if he really wanted to keep his word.
