Rehana Fathima suspended after arrest over FB post

KOCHI: Activist Rehana Fathima was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly hurting religious sentiment with her social media posts. But, people who filed the police complaint claimed that her knee was seen in the picture and this hurt religious sentiments. “She had only posted a picture of hers wearing a devotee’s attire on social media. A team led by Pathanamthitta CI arrested Rehana from BSNL’s Palarivattom office around 1pm. We don't understand how a woman’s photo showing her knee would be anti-religious in a country where naked saints are worshipped.

KOCHI: Activist Rehana Fathima was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly hurting religious sentiment with her social media posts. A team led by Pathanamthitta CI arrested Rehana from BSNL’s Palarivattom office around 1pm. Later in the day, BSNL Ernakulam regional office informed that she was placed under suspension with immediate effect, pending investigation.At night, she was produced before before the chief judicial magistrate, Pathanamthitta, and was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. Police took her to Kottarakkara sub-jail.“We are in the process of recovering her phone and laptop that were allegedly used for making the controversial social media post,” said police.Earlier, she was taken to Pathanamthitta police station where a case was registered against her under Section 295A of IPC (deliberate and malicious acts outraging religious sentiments) on October 20. A complaint was filed by BJP leader R Radhakrishna Menon to the Pathanamthitta district police chief on October 21.Her partner Manoj Sreedharan said Rehana would go on an indefinite fast in prison to protest against the arrest . “She had only posted a picture of hers wearing a devotee’s attire on social media. But, people who filed the police complaint claimed that her knee was seen in the picture and this hurt religious sentiments. We don't understand how a woman’s photo showing her knee would be anti-religious in a country where naked saints are worshipped.
