Dilapidated Kuttiady road a concern for motorists

KOZHIKODE: Dilapidated Kuttiady-Wayanad Ghat road is giving nightmare to the motorists. The NH division is now allowing heavy goods carriages on the Thamarassery ghat road, Kuttiady ghat roadduring night hours, he added.In the meantime, when contacted the PWD officials, they said that the repair work of the road would be carried out immediately. However, lack of proper maintenance and repair works resulted in the damage to the road.An absence of proper lighting and police patrolling have also made Kuttiady ghat road a risky stretch for vehicles from Karnataka and other states. The condition of the road also worsens traffic congestion on the stretch as the vehicles are unable to move at a steady pace.“Kuttiady-Wayanad road is one of the two connecting roads to Wayanad. As heavy vehicles are banned on the Thamarassery ghat road during the daytime, the Kuttiady stretch is being depended on by truck drivers during the daytime,” said P Mohammed, a resident.The surface work of the road was carried nearly five years ago under the Kerala State Transport Project.

The road, which is depended on by a large number of interstate trucks and other goods and transport vehicles, is in pathetic condition.The 20 kilometre stretch between Kuttiady and Niravil Puzha is pothole filled making the drive a difficult task for people. The condition of the road also worsens traffic congestion on the stretch as the vehicles are unable to move at a steady pace.“Kuttiady-Wayanad road is one of the two connecting roads to Wayanad. The drive along the stretch becomes even more difficult during night hours as these potholes are not visible in the absence of proper lighting along the stretch.The local residents and motorists have long been demanding the installation of street lights along the stretch to prevent road accidents and to avoid attacks on trucks.Many incidents of pelting of stones at trucks plying on the road during the night were reported along the stretch. Unidentified miscreants rule the stretch as the area lack proper lighting and the vehicles move at a slow pace due the poor condition of the road.The road is remaining in the abandoned state despite the importance that it connects Kozhikode with Wayanad, said K V Riyas. The NH division is now allowing heavy goods carriages on the Thamarassery ghat road, Kuttiady ghat roadduring night hours, he added.In the meantime, when contacted the PWD officials, they said that the repair work of the road would be carried out immediately.
