Kerala gets its fourth international airport

It will also have a special service to Delhi on the inaugural day, said officials.Regular service will begin the next day. GoAir also has evinced interest to have service to Abu Dhabi, Dammam, Muscat and Kuwait, and the nod is expected soon. Ahead of that various cultural activities, including a percussion ensemble led by Mattannur Sankarankutty and team, are also being organized to add glitter to the inaugural function. The inaugural flight will return from Abu Dhabi in the evening.

KANNUR: Opening a new chapter in the aviation history of Kerala , chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union minister for civil aviation Suresh Prabhu will formally inaugurate Kannur International Airport (Kial) on Sunday. The dignitaries will formally inaugurate the airport terminal and flag off the inaugural flight at 9.55am, thus opening the airport for commercial operation. Ahead of that various cultural activities, including a percussion ensemble led by Mattannur Sankarankutty and team, are also being organized to add glitter to the inaugural function. The passengers in the inaugural flight, Air India Express to Abu Dhabi, will be accorded a special reception at the airport and will be presented with gifts, said the officials.The VIP longue at the departure area will be inaugurated by ports minister Ramachandran Kadannappally, while the ATM counter will be inaugurated by transport minister A K Saseendran. The Malabar Frame Loom, installed at the departure area, will be inaugurated by industries minister E P Jayarajan while the foreign exchange counter will be opened by health minister K K Shailaja. Revenue minister E Chandrasekharan will inaugurate the food and beverage service.On day one itself, Air India Express and GoAir will launch services from here. The inaugural flight will return from Abu Dhabi in the evening. GoAir will have a special schedule on the inaugural day and the flight from Bengaluru to Thiruvananthapuram will land here around noon and take the VIPs at the inaugural function to Thiruvananthapuram. It will also have a special service to Delhi on the inaugural day, said officials.Regular service will begin the next day. It will operate six services from Bengaluru, four from Hyderabad and three from Chennai in a week to Kannur. Apart from Abu Dhabi, the AI Express will have services to Doha, Sharjah and Riyadh, while the service to Muscat would start soon. GoAir also has evinced interest to have service to Abu Dhabi, Dammam, Muscat and Kuwait, and the nod is expected soon. Indigo will start services in the middle of January, according to Kial.Apart from the flights that would have service form here, private aircraft by the director board members of Kial and other officials will also be allowed there, and it is expected that around 15 aircraft would be parked in the apron on the inaugural day, said the officials.Since a huge crowd is expected at the inaugural function, there will be traffic regulation, said police.Meanwhile, Congress has said that the party leaders would boycott the inaugural function. The LDF government and the Kial authorities had not invited the former chief ministers Oommen Chandy and V S Achuthanandan for the inaugural function, which is narrow-mindedness, said DCC president Satheesan Pacheni.The BJP also said it would boycott the inauguration as part of the party decision to boycott all programmes attended by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other ministers.
