KOCHI: After muted sales during Onam season retailers in Kochi are expecting brisk sales during this Christmas season . Automobile dealers are also expecting a 25-30% year-on-year increase in sales, said managing director of Popular Vehicles and Services John K Paul.“We are expecting this trend to continue till January end,” he said. Marketers are smart to sense that, at least that’s what the shelves of stores around us indicate. What prompts the dealers and companies to bet on a better season is the fact that Kerala has recovered after the floods.“People are too tired of austerity and grief. “There were rumours that the rates would come down from the current 28% to 18%,” Mathew added.

KOCHI: After muted sales during Onam season retailers in Kochi are expecting brisk sales during this Christmas season . What prompts the dealers and companies to bet on a better season is the fact that Kerala has recovered after the floods.“People are too tired of austerity and grief. Marketers are smart to sense that, at least that’s what the shelves of stores around us indicate. It is good to see that business is back after a brief pause. I hope this Christmas and New Year season will bring a big swing in sales and that will boost the confidence of business community setting a momentum and promise for brands and brand custodians,” said Buzzstop Integrated Communications managing director Dominic Savio.According to Jerry Mathew, managing director of Whitemart, the home appliance retail franchise, business has been witnessing a growth in Kerala, for the past three months.“During October, we had a 150% growth, followed by 40% in November and for December, we are expecting a growth in sales only,” he said.“The white and brown goods market is growing by 10% generally in Kerala. But there are dealers who had registered higher rate of growth recently,” said former president of Dealers’Association of TV and Appliances Kerala (DATA-Kerala) Jose J Ponnezhath.“With easy finance options available, there are dealers who have registered 20-25% growth in sales,” said Ponnezhath, who is also the managing director of Angel Agencies.Mathew added that if the GST rates of appliances come down, that will spur a further increase in sales. “There were rumours that the rates would come down from the current 28% to 18%,” Mathew added. If GST rates come down, prices of air conditioners will go down by Rs 2,000 to 3,000, said Bismi Group chairman V A Yousuf.“Likewise, there would be a cut of Rs 1,000-1,500 in 32inch TV prices,” he said.Managing director of Pittappillil Agencies Peter Paul Pittappillil said that companies were expecting the sales to pick up dramatically after December 20. “There is generally a belief that 15% growth could be achieved during Christmas,” he said.“We are seeing a positive trend and had noticed it from November, which was the best month when compared with the past three years. And December is when people buy a lot of things as it is also a wedding month,” said business head of LuLu shopping mall Shibu Philips. With a better sale expected, LuLu Hypermarket had imported a lot of Christmas accessories from Thailand, Taiwan and China, which was well received by customers, said Lulu Hypermarket general manager Sudheesh C.LuLu Fashion and Connect are also registering increase in sales, he added. Automobile dealers are also expecting a 25-30% year-on-year increase in sales, said managing director of Popular Vehicles and Services John K Paul.“We are expecting this trend to continue till January end,” he said.
