KOCHI: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is hopeful about completing the civil works of Kochi Metro project from Maharaja’s College to Thykoodam by next month-end.Officials with the Metro authority said that they have completed 90% of civil works along the five-km stretch.Officials added that apart from the station works at Ernakulam South, civil works of the viaduct at a few places are pending.“We have started track-laying and electrical works wherever it is possible. Though it was expected that Metro’s civil works from Maharaja’s College to Thykoodam will be completed by December 2018, the deluge in August brought the work to a halt. By mid-January, Metro viaduct will cross Vyttila Junction,” said DMRC spokesperson. The joint venture between Cherian Varkey Construction Company and Vijay Nirman Constructions (CVCC & VNC) are carrying out the construction works along the stretch.“Opening of the Metro rail from Maharaja’s College to Vyttila is expected to decongest the city. It is also expected to bring down the air levels of pollution at Vyttila Junction.

Migrant labourers working at the Metro’s construction sites left for their homeland during the time of floods.DMRC principal adviser E Sreedharan had pointed out that the extension of Kochi Metro to Tripunithura would increase Metro’s ridership. The ridership hugely depends on the populous regions of Tripunithura. With the completion of the Metro network till Thykoodam, its operational stretch will increase from a total of 18km to 23km. Linking Metro with Vyttila Mobility Hub is also an integral part of providing seamless transport connectivity. The Metro authority expressed hope that the stretch from Maharaja’s College to Thykoodam will be operational by June 2019. The joint venture between Cherian Varkey Construction Company and Vijay Nirman Constructions (CVCC & VNC) are carrying out the construction works along the stretch.“Opening of the Metro rail from Maharaja’s College to Vyttila is expected to decongest the city. It will encourage many people to leave behind their private vehicles and take a Metro ride. It is also expected to bring down the air levels of pollution at Vyttila Junction. The city will benefit from Metro once it crosses the national highway and establish a link with regions such as Pettah and Tripunithura,” said a Metro official.
