73% of Kochiites do not wear rear seat belts, reveals survey

KOCHI: The Kochi city has India’s second highest population that has never used a rear seat belt According to a study on ‘rear seat belt usage and child road safety in India’ by Nissan India and SaveLIFE Foundation, 73.2% (577 people) of the respondents in Kochi never used rear seat belts in their life time. Surprisingly, 17.3 % also said they were not aware of the rear seat-belt.When it comes to compliance, 91% of respondents nationally said they had never been stopped by police for not wearing a rear seat belt. In Kochi, the case was no different, as all city respondents said they had never been stopped. This could be one of the reasons why 90.5% of Kochi strongly advocated for a strong child safety law for reducing children road fatalities in India,” Nissan India said.

Guwahati was at the top position with 76.5% and Patna was at the third position with 72.7%. Others are: Jaipur - 72.4%, Lucknow - 70.3%, Delhi - 67.4%, Kolkata - 66.7%, Mumbai - 62.9%, Panaji - 62.4%, Chennai - 59.1% and Bengaluru - 55.5%.Research firm MDRA conducted the research for the report. The 11-city study recorded responses through 6,306 face-to-face interviews, 100 in-depth expert interviews, two focused group discussions and on-site observations to gauge compliance of CBSE School Bus guidelines as well as rear seat belt use, the Nissan India said.The report further revealed that while 70% of Indians confirmed the presence of rear seat belts in their respective vehicles, a dismal 7% admitted to using it regularly.Asked for the reason behind their reluctance to buckle up, 4 out of 10 of India’s respondents said it was not mandatory. Over half (54.9%) of Kochi respondents cited the same reason for their rear seat belt avoidance. Surprisingly, 17.3 % also said they were not aware of the rear seat-belt.When it comes to compliance, 91% of respondents nationally said they had never been stopped by police for not wearing a rear seat belt. In Kochi, the case was no different, as all city respondents said they had never been stopped. Further, 40% of Kochi respondents felt that it was not necessary to make the use of rear seat belt mandatory.“The study, which also focused on the safety of children, revealed that nationally, close to two-thirds of the parents, consider their city roads unsafe for children. Kochi was no different as 80.7% of respondents echoed a similar sentiment. This could be one of the reasons why 90.5% of Kochi strongly advocated for a strong child safety law for reducing children road fatalities in India,” Nissan India said.
