Walkway to be tourism zone on January 26

KOCHI: As part of spreading awareness about anti-drug campaign District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) will convert the Queen’s Walkway on Chathiyath Road stretch to a tourism zone on January 26 The tourism zone will be formulated by prohibiting traffic to the lane next to the walkway on Chathiyath road. DTPC has also planned to conduct cultural events as part of the initiative.“This event has been planned to be conducted on a trial basis. DTPC has also opened other tour packages to Munnar, Suryanelli, Kolukkumalai, Bhoothathankettu and Thattekad. DTPC has invited applications from cultural associations, sports groups, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, event management teams, educational institutions for conducting events on the day. One-day package, which will start from Vyttila at 6am, will cost about Rs 1,250, including food.

Other areas in the city with less traffic could also follow the suit once a month, if this programme becomes a success,” said DTPC secretary S Vijayakumar.The concept has also been planned for nurturing the idea of pedestrian-friendly roads, he added. DTPC has invited applications from cultural associations, sports groups, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, event management teams, educational institutions for conducting events on the day. Programmes such as kayaking, yoga and angling have also been planned to be conducted near the walkway.Interested groups can send a detailed description about the programme to DTPC secretary before Sunday through email, post or directly.Meanwhile, DTPC in association with Travelmate Solutions has started one and two-day tour packages to Ilaveezha Poonchira, Kattikkayam waterfalls and Illikkal Kallu. One-day package, which will start from Vyttila at 6am, will cost about Rs 1,250, including food. DTPC has also opened other tour packages to Munnar, Suryanelli, Kolukkumalai, Bhoothathankettu and Thattekad.
