Home-alone lady doc robbed of cash, valuables worth Rs 16 lakh

KOCHI: Robbers broke into the house of a doctor in Chengamanad and fled with 57 sovereign of gold, a diamond necklace worth Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 79,000 in cash after threatening the house owner in the wee hours of Saturday.The robbery was reported from the house of Dr Grace Mathew, wife of Mathew. Grace of Mampattathu Parudeesa House at Athani works in Community Health Centre in Chengamanad.The doctor stays alone at the house, according to police.Around 2am on Saturday, two unidentified people barged into her house breaking open the back door. Hearing the noise, the doctor woke up from her sleep and found two people with faces covered with towels standing in the bedroom.One of them threatened to kill her if she raised voice. “When I asked them who they are, they ordered me to remain on bed without making any noise. Later, one of them tied my hand with a shawl to a leg of the cot, and caught hold of other hand and removed my bangles and ring,” Grace said.“Meanwhile, the other man opened the almirah and took the gold and cash from the locker inside. When I requested them not to take anything, saying we earned them with hard work, one of them said: ‘You are a doctor. You can earn money and valuables again’,” she said. The robbers spent around half-an-hour in the house before fleeing with the valuables.“The doctor soon rang Angamaly police, who in turn alerted us. Despite reaching her house in the nick of time, we did not see any vehicle or people in suspicious circumstances on the way. The house owner also did not hear the sound of any vehicle passing after the thieves fled the gold and money,” a police officer with Chengamanad station said.The doctor said she can identify their voices. “They are fat people and I suspect they are locals. I had taken the ornaments from locker for the marriage of a cousin. I was supposed to keep back the valuables in the bank locker on Saturday morning,” Grace said.Grace’s husband works in the United States and her son is in Mumbai. The doctor told police that the gold and diamond were kept in locker. But she took it back home one month ago as part of a function.Forensic experts and a dog squad visited the spot for evidence collection.A case has been registered under various sections, including 380, of the IPC.
