Youth held with synthetic drug

KOCHI: Excise sleuths in Varappuzha on Saturday arrested a youth on charges of possession and sale of synthetic drugs. In another two cases, the officials seized gold bars which were concealed inside the sandals worn by two passengers who reached CIAL from Malaysia. Around 48 nitrazepam tablets, a hypnotic drug, were seized from him along with 100 grams of ganja. 32.59 lakhs were seized from a passenger who was scheduled to fly to Malaysia. The accused was identified as Afsal Harris (25), a resident of Thayikattukara in Aluva.

The accused was identified as Afsal Harris (25), a resident of Thayikattukara in Aluva. Around 48 nitrazepam tablets, a hypnotic drug, were seized from him along with 100 grams of ganja. He was nabbed from near Manjummel Amalothbhavamatha church around 8pm on Friday.According to the officials, the accused had been under surveillance following the tip-off that he was selling drugs to school and college students in and around Varappuzha.The actual cost of a strip of Nitrazepam tablets is around Rs 50, but the accused was selling it for Rs 300 to Rs 500.It cannot be sold or use without a proper medical prescription , an official said.A case has been registered against him under the NDPS Act.Customs seize currency, gold bars at CIALThe air Intelligence unit of Kochi customs department seized foreign currencies and gold bars in four separate cases from passengers at Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) on Saturday.In the first case, foreign currencies worth Rs. 32.59 lakhs were seized from a passenger who was scheduled to fly to Malaysia. In another two cases, the officials seized gold bars which were concealed inside the sandals worn by two passengers who reached CIAL from Malaysia. In the fourth case, gold rods concealed inside a body-cream container was seized from the baggage of a passenger who arrived from Jeddah via Kuwait.According to a customs official, the seized gold articles weighed 1430.2 grams in total and valued Rs. 39.86 lakhs. All the accused were later released on bail.
