Kerala: Male nurse hailed for helping woman deliver baby at home

ALAPPUZHA: A male nurse is receiving praises from all quarters for helping a woman deliver a baby at her home after the ambulance with which he was attached could not reach her residence to take her to a hospital.Emergency medical technician (EMT) Sona Rajan (30) not only helped the woman, he also rushed her and her child to a hospital for further treatment.Rajan said that the 108 control room received a phone call at 7.40pm on Wednesday from pregnant woman's home requesting an ambulance to Kakkanad in Kayamkulam to admit her to a hospital."The 108 Ambulance reached Kakkanad in just 15 minutes covering a distance of 20km. However, the ambulance had to stop about 500 metre from her house due to narrow lanes. So, me and ambulance driver Manu Varghese reached her home on foot with a delivery kit," Rajan said.Both Rajan and Varghese understood that they could not carry the heavily-pregnant woman to the ambulance as the delivery might take place any time. Rajan then decided to assist the woman who gave birth to a baby boy weighing 2,700 grams. Rajan himself cut the umbilical cord of the baby and performed emergency medical drill to stabilise the condition of the woman and her newborn.The duo then carried the woman and her baby to the ambulance following which they were admitted to the Kayamkulam taluk hospital.Hospital superintendent L Manoj said he appreciated the work of the nurse and the driver, who have set an example."The mother and the baby are safe and healthy at the hospital," Manoj said.
