KOCHI: Police are leaving no stone unturned on their crackdown against goondas. The latest action is monitoring the social media activities of goondas following information on social media pages idolising goondas.“We have come across Facebook pages for some of the goons. We don’t want to invite more traction to these pages by naming them but such pages have come to our notice. We have been monitoring these pages and those who subscribe to them,” said Kochi city deputy commissioner of police (DCP) J Himendranath.The DCP added that there is apprehension in the department that followers of these pages could turn to criminal activities in future. “We have observed that these pages are made by those who idolisescriminals. Such persons and those who subscribe to these pages are likely to become associates of these criminals. We don’t want anyone to get inspired by such characters. The only way to curb this is by arresting such criminals and putting them behind bars,” said the DCP.He added that the cyber cell is already tracking the followers and subscribers.Police said that they have noticed a nexus between narcotics mafia and goons in the city. “Goons who indulge in activities like threatening and extortion is likely to facilitate narcotics smuggling and promoteabuse. Youths who start off as small-time peddlers later meet up such characters. Those who already admire and idolise such criminals are likely to join them or be their associates,” said a police officer.Officials said that the action against goondas would be held in a comprehensive way so as to eradicate narcotics abuse along with goonda activity in the city.
