THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Police have begun a probe after a drone was allegedly spotted flying close to some of the vital locations in the capital, including the airport, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thumba and Kovalam . A flying object – suspected to be an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) – was spotted near these installations late on Thursday night. Police had also alerted the central industrial security force that oversees the security of VSSC. “It has been reported that drone or a similar object was spotted at these locations. We are probing the matter,” said ADGP (south zone) Manoj Abraham.State intelligence also launched a probe, taking into consideration the sensitivity of the areas. Top police sources said that all angles will be probed. “Drones that are usually used in private functions like marriages do not usually have night vision and a maximum radius of 100m, beyond which the operator would lose control. It must be verified if the object lost the control and was seen at various locations. In that case, it would have fallen somewhere,” sources added. Meanwhile, military intelligence and Southern Air Command are closely monitoring the developments.According to recent central regulations, vicinity of airports, international border, Vijay Chowk in Delhi, state secretariat complex in state capitals, strategic locations, vital and military installations etc are categorized as no-drone zones. The directorate general of civil aviation had issued civil aviation requirements (CAR) for civil use of remotely-piloted aircraft system (RPAS) that are commonly known as drones. The regulation, developed after extensive consultations among stakeholders, came into force from December 1, 2018.As per the regulation, there are five categories of RPAS (based on weight), namely nano, micro, small, medium and large. All RPAS, except nano and those owned by NTRO and central intelligence agencies must be registered with unique identification number (UIN). Also, operators need to get permits for operating RPAS.
