MVD's 'Freaken' drive to get altered vehicles off roads

"Due to the presence of roadside eateries, many people from various parts of the city are coming to Panampilly Nagar. "We conducted the drive at Panampilly Nagar following complaints from residents in the area. Traffic at Panampilly Nagar also increased during night due to the presence of small eateries and more shops have come up in the vicinity. The drive would continue in the coming days," said enforcement RTO K Manoj Kumar.MVD also served notices to three vehicle owners, who sped off seeing the vehicle checking.Residents, who reached the spot seeing the drive, handed over photos of speeding vehicles at Panampilly Nagar to officials. But closing shops at 8pm would affect the business," said a resident.Residents also complained that Panampilly Nagar, where parking space is available, has become a "dumping yard" for many vehicle owners.

KOCHI: Enforcement wing of the motor vehicles department (MVD) has served notices to owners of 65 vehicles, including cars, SUVs and two-wheelers, for making modifications in violation of motor vehicle rules, at Panampilly Nagar Following complaints from residents in the area, seven teams, including two shadow squads, conducted the drive, 'Freaken', from Friday night till Saturday morning."Action will be taken against owners if they fail to produce the vehicle along with proper documents at the RTO office at Kakkanad on the next working day. The drive would continue in the coming days," said enforcement RTO K Manoj Kumar.MVD also served notices to three vehicle owners, who sped off seeing the vehicle checking.Residents, who reached the spot seeing the drive, handed over photos of speeding vehicles at Panampilly Nagar to officials."We conducted the drive at Panampilly Nagar following complaints from residents in the area. Similar issues were reported at the area earlier and we had acted. But after a brief lull, the issue comes up again," said a motor vehicle inspector."The seized vehicles include an SUV of a non-resident Keralite. The owner altered the vehicle in Delhi spending Rs 7.5 lakh. He fixed additional lights, used powerful silencers and replaced steering. We impose a fine Rs 2,000 for the offence," said an MVD official.The owner and the vehicle will be relieved from the case only if s/he removes the customized modifications and produce it before the RTO, said the official.Meanwhile, residents complained that antisocials roam around the area, especially during night hours."Due to the presence of roadside eateries, many people from various parts of the city are coming to Panampilly Nagar. Antisocials using drugs also create ruckus in the park near the shopping complex. Once they had come up with weapons and attempted to hack a person. Police asked us to close shops by 8pm to nab antisocials and to avoid problems created by outsiders. But closing shops at 8pm would affect the business," said a resident.Residents also complained that Panampilly Nagar, where parking space is available, has become a "dumping yard" for many vehicle owners."People park vehicles on roadsides and take it back only after many days. Some owners parked their cars for two months in the area and they took it back only when people filed complaints. Traffic at Panampilly Nagar also increased during night due to the presence of small eateries and more shops have come up in the vicinity. City corporation should take steps to ensure that shops are coming up abiding all the norms," he said.
