Flex boards for election campaign: Kerala HC directs for strict action

KOCHI: The Kerala high court has directed for strict action against political parties that put up illegal flex boards , banners, boards, and other signages during the election campaign . District collectors should ensure that action is being taken, the court said. If it is not possible, revenue recovery action should be initiated, the court directed.Besides, the court had directed for registering criminal cases against erring political parties or candidates and has warned that the liability for not taking such cases would rest with the police officers concerned. In an interim order, justice Devan Ramachandran said district election officers should ensure compliance to a division bench’s order of March 11 stipulating that only eco-friendly materials should be used for campaigning.Besides ordering to use eco-friendly materials, the division bench led by chief justice Hrishikesh Roy had banned the use of PVC flex boards and other such non-biodegradable materials as campaign material.As per Monday’s court order, the illegal campaign materials should be returned to the political parties and candidates and they should be imposed fines.
