Buttermilk, watermelon to keep cops 'cool'

KOCHI: Due to the rising temperature, city police are taking measures to provide respite to its personnel who are on outdoor duty like traffic regulation or vehicle inspection.Police vans are supplying bottled drinking water twice a day to all personnel deployed in and around the city since Saturday. Distribution of buttermilk and watermelon slices to police will also start from Monday.City police are also planning to distribute umbrellas to police officers on traffic duty at major junctions.Police have been given instructions to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 11am and 3pm, except in case of emergencies.City police commissioner S Surendran said that the decision was to ensure that heat strain and humidity do not affect the officers' duty especially in the light of election."The summer heat could be hazardous for officers, especially those deployed for traffic-related duties as they are exposed to long periods of direct and intense sun exposure. A few days ago, a civil police officer who was engaged in vehicle checking at Thoppumpady experienced dizziness and dehydration forcing him to seek medical assistance. Duty demands their presence but they have to be careful as the number of sunburn and sunstroke cases are increasing," he said.As much as Rs 60,000 has already been allotted from the police welfare fund for this and an additional Rs 20,000 will be approved soon to ensure enough stocks till the end of summer.
