Vaiga, an international workshop and exhibition on value addition in agriculture, began here on Wednesday with a call to generate new knowledge and consolidate the already acquired expertise in agricultural value addition.
Agriculture minister V S Sunilkumar, who presided over the inaugural session of the fifth edition of this annual event, said Kerala would be introducing a welfare fund board for farmers for the first time in the country.

He said the farmers’ welfare fund board will become functional within a week, and its headquarters will be in Thrissur.
When contacted P Rajendran, the former vice chancellor of the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), who has been designated as the chairman of the board said the focus will be on improving the quality of life of the farmers in the later part of their lives. Providing pension to the farmers, and ensuring health insurance coverage for them will be some of the activities to be undertaken by the board. Support will be provided for the education of the farmers’ children by the board. The possibilities of providing low interest housing loans to the farmers will also be explored, he said.
