Finance and taxation course gets a fillip

The demand for B.Com Model I Finance and Taxation course has recorded a jump compared to the previous academic year. The B.Com course in Finance and Taxation Model I has topped the list of the most preferred courses in the academic year 2017-18. Earlier, there were reports that the demand for experts in taxation and finance would soar after the implementation of GST. KOCHI: The rise in demand for tax and finance professionals post-GST seems to have hit the right note for the undergraduate programme in finance and taxation offered by Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU). The demand for the undergraduate course in management showed an increase compared with the previous year.

The B.Com course in Finance and Taxation Model I has topped the list of the most preferred courses in the academic year 2017-18. Nearly 1.17 lakh options were registered for the programme under the varsity’s centralised allotment process (CAP), reflecting the increasing demand for tax and finance programmes. Earlier, there were reports that the demand for experts in taxation and finance would soar after the implementation of GST. Incidentally, several companies are looking for personnel trained in account solutions after the rollout of the new tax regime. The demand for B.Com Model I Finance and Taxation course has recorded a jump compared to the previous academic year. Around 1.02 lakh options were submitted for the course in 2016-17. While applying, a student may opt for any number of colleges affiliated to the university. The undergraduate course in Maths Model I also witnessed a jump. As many as 45,079 options were submitted this time, while the corresponding figure last year was 34,819. The BA Economics programme retained its position as the second most popular course. As many as 82,200 options were submitted for the programme in the new academic year. The corresponding figure last year was 68,712. Among science undergraduate courses, BSc programmes in Chemistry came first with an option count of 72,214. The corresponding figure in the 2016-17 academic year was 57,400. The demand for the BSc Physics course slipped compared to the Chemistry programme this year. The option count for the Physics undergraduate programme this time was 69,665. It was the most preferred science course last year, with an option count of 58,700 as against 57,400 registered for the chemistry programme. The BA English Language and Literature programme topped the list of the most preferred language courses in the new academic year. As many as 65,127 options were submitted for the programme. The corresponding figure last year was 50,909. The demand for the undergraduate course in management showed an increase compared with the previous year. As many as 38,610 options were submitted for the Bachelor of Business Administration programme. The option count last year was 27,126. The other courses that figured among the top 10 included BSc Zoology Model I (55, 481) and B. Sc Botany Model I (49, 609).
