more-in The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) on Wednesday took into custody a refrigerated van registered in Gurgaon in Haryana for operating without exhibiting the registration number. The van belonging to a Gurgaon-based transportation company was found carrying chocolates in bulk to a company godown at Ravipuram. The vehicle drew the attention of MVD officials when it was parked near the godown. “That the vehicle has reached thus far crossing multiple States and countless check posts without sporting the registration number on any side was simply astonishing. Had it involved in some kind of an accident along the way, it would not have been possible to even trace it,” said Motor Vehicle Inspector George Thomas who along with Assistant MVI S. Ranjith took the vehicle into custody. Asked why the registration number was not being exhibited, the driver passed on the blame stating that the company had turned a deaf ear to his request to correct the anomaly. Rules violated The MVD slapped a fine of ?5,000 for the offence and asked the company to exhibit the number on all four sides of the vehicle as a precondition for releasing it. “We often come across inter-State vehicles with hard-to-read registration number plates or damaged number plates,” said Mr. Thomas. The company apparently violated a number of rules and was charged under Section 39 of the Motor Vehicles Act and Section 90 of Central Motor Vehicle Rules and was fined under Section 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
