Initially, free rides will be available to commuters from six major metro stations, and 40 brand new cycles will be deployed for the purpose. KMRL had to take over the project on its own after the PBS programme, launched in June in association with a private cycle club, did not really take off along expected lines. There were even reports that cycles deployed at some points had even started rusting. By taking over the programme, the metro agency hopes that commuters will fall back on cycles and make use of the free rides to reach destinations near stations. KMRL proposes to introduce the system on the lines of hub-and-spoke model wherein metro stations will serve as hubs. The existing cycle racks at Menaka, South Railway Station, North Railway Station, and Kaloor will serve as spokes. Commuters will be allowed to take cycles from any hub or spoke and return them to any other hub or spoke that suits their convenience. Lock code The only condition is that commuters should ensure that they leave the cycles locked, for which a number lock code will be provided to them via SMS, a KMRL official said. In addition, KMRL has identified potential dedicated cycle corridors along stretches like M.G. Road, Boat Jetty, Panampilly Nagar, Kadavanthra, CUSAT, and Fort Kochi. The metro agency also proposes to promote usage of bikes by giving commuters a chance to win credit points for using bikes, subject to a specific number of hours. These points can be redeemed through the Kochi - 1 card to be brought out in association with Axis Bank.
