more-in The Kerala Institute of Labour and Employment (KILE), an autonomous body constituted by the State government for training and research in labour and allied subjects, is set to undertake a comprehensive training to bring about a change in the mindset and behaviour of autorickshaw drivers in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode districts. KILE launched the first initiative in this direction here on Thursday in association with Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) by undertaking training of autorickshaw drivers identified to be inducted for operating feeder services for the metro. As many as 300 autorickshaw drivers, divided into five batches, will be given a day-long training in two sessions by next Thursday. KMRL Managing Director A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish inaugurated the programme on Thursday. “The twin sessions will focus on Motor Vehicles Act, road safety, and behavioural and attitudinal changes in drivers. KMRL has a bigger goal of making close to 15,000 autorickshaw drivers along the metro route competent with online cabs, while KILE’s mandate is restricted to training them,” said J.N. Kiran, senior fellow with KILE. All the 300 drivers will be deployed at 16 metro stations. KMRL proposes to make the autorickshaws readily identifiable with LED lights and uniform for drivers. Though some drivers had been operating feeder services on a trial basis, their behaviour was found much to be desired, following which the training programme was mooted in association with KILE. After the training programme in Kochi, KILE will turn its focus to Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, where ward-level training will be given to autorickshaw drivers. It will begin at Attipra ward where Technopark is situated. Shortly, a meeting with trade unions will be held, and their suggestions will be incorporated into the training programme. This will be followed by training in Kozhikode Corporation. KILE’s mandate is mainly three-fold. This includes training workers and their dependents in diverse sectors as also trade union leaders mainly in labour laws and welfare schemes. Besides, there is a core research team undertaking research on labour and employment-related issues. Annually, research is conducted on four to five subjects, and reports are submitted to the government.
