Six die in Nagaland flashfloods since July

Rijiju was scheduled to survey the affected areas but was unable to do so due to inclement weather.

KOHIMA: At least six people have died and 4,000 families have been evacuated to safer places following torrential rain and flashfloods across Nagaland since the last one month, a top government official said here on Monday.At least six people have died in Kohima and Zunheboto districts since July, said chief secretary Temjen Toy. He added that food and relief materials were being airdropped by IAF in various places of the state. "We have made successful airdropping of rations at Tening. But we were unsuccessful at Kiphire, Tobu and some others places because of bad weather," said Toy, while replying to a question that several affected families did not have enough food. Tening is located in the southernmost district of Peren.About 400 villages across the state have been affected and 4,000 families evacuated to safer places, the chief secretary added. "Various departments and agencies are working round the clock. The damage could have been much worse if timely support was not provided to the affected people," he said.Road connectivity has been badly hit in Kiphire district bordering Myanmar and IAF planes had been airdropping food in the affected areas. "The IAF on Monday carried out seven sorties to airdrop essential commodities like , rice, pulses, onions, potatoes, cooking oil, salt, milk powder, sugar and tea leaves," said defence PRO Col C Konwer. He added that the IAF would airdrop 10,352 kg of essential commodities in Tening, Tobu and Kiphire. Kiphire district in eastern Nagaland has been cut off from all sides and repair and restoration work is on.The chief secretary said only temporary repair work of roads was being carried out and what the state needed to look forward to was a permanent solution.Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju, chief minister Neiphiu Rio and central officials reviewed the situation on Sunday. Rijiju was scheduled to survey the affected areas but was unable to do so due to inclement weather.
