GUWAHATI: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) will be holding a mass protest on the October 31 against Indo-Naga peace talks that could affect the territorial integrity of Manipur. The main motive of the mass protest in Manipur is to coincide with the final settlement of the ongoing peace talks, which is likely to be finalized by October 31. A mass candlelight vigil was held across Naga inhabited areas in the district of Manipur for “inclusive, honourable, and acceptable solution” to the protracted Indo-Naga peace process. It was organised by Naga frontal organizations of the respective areas in response to the Naga Students Federation urge for observing the vigil in all the Naga homeland. The convener of COCOMI, Sunil Karam, has called upon the people to put a stop to their daily activities and join the protest. He also warned that the protest could turn into a worst form ever witnessed in the state — larger than the 2001 protests which resulted in the death of 18 civilians. It is to be mentioned that, the Indo-Naga talks seek to settle disputes that date back to colonial rule. The Nagas are not a single tribe. They are an ethnic community that comprises of several tribes who live in the state of Nagaland and its neighbourhood. One prime demand of Naga groups has been a Greater Nagalim. The demand of Naga nationalism, which began during British rule, has continued after Independence, and even after Nagaland became a state.
