Kolhapur: Over hundred workers of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) were detained and immediately released on Wednesday morning while they were marching towards the house of party's rebel corporator Afzal Pirzade.Pirzade, along with NCP corporator Ajinkya Chavan, had voted against NCP's candidate Megha Patil for the post of chairman of the standing committee of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC). Both voted for BJP candidate Ashish Dhawale who clinched the chairman post.On Tuesday, Pirzade had alleged that he voted against the alleged corrupt corporators of the NCP and made stinging remarks against leader Hasan Mushrif. Responding to the allegations of Pirzade, NCP workers decided to carry out a protest march to his house but were detainded on their way. Heavy police personnel was deployed in the vicinity of Pirzade's house in Siddharthnagar. Leaders alleged Pirzade has demeaned the mandate given by the people to him.Rajesh Latkar, city president of NCP, alleged that both Pirzade and Chavan have received a bribe of Rs 1.5 crore each to vote for the BJP candidate. "Both have taken money from the BJP. In the last two years, Pirzade has not carried out any development work in his ward. He should resign and contest election as an independent. He elected on party's ticket and the defied party whip," said Latkar.On the other hand, Chavan alleged NCP is not a secular party. "All the important posts were given to corporators of one religion. Hasina Faras was given the post of mayor because she was a Muslim. Even though NCP is in power, corporators like me did not get adequate funds to carry out development works. I voted for BJP candidate with the hope that he will allocate funds for development works in my ward," said Chavan in a statement released on Wednesday.
