Activists condemn delay in Pansare murder probe, warn of agitation

Rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and M M Kalburgi were also killed in a similar fashion in Pune and Dharwad, respectively. More than 25 agitators, including Pansare’s wife Uma Pansare , were detained by police from the spot and were later released.Addressing the gathering, Uma Pansare said, “Three years have passed since Pansare fell to the bullets of unidentified persons. Rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and M M Kalburgi were also killed in a similar fashion in Pune and Dharwad, respectively. The investigating agencies have not yet reached the mastermind behind these attacks. This indicates the attitude of the government towards the investigation of the case. We condemn the attitude of the Maharashtra government and demand that the government should take immediate steps to speed up the investigation and nab the mastermind behind these crimes.”Vasantrao Mulik, another participant in the agitation, said, “If the government fails to take immediate steps to nab the mastermind behind the murders of these rationalist thinkers, we will have to launch a state-wide agitation. The government should take note of this and speed up the investigation.”Other major demands of the agitators included arrest of Vinay Pawar and Sarang Akolkar, who are named as accused in the chargesheet and are absconding, declaration of accused involved in Pansare case as terrorists, and a combing operation to arrest the suspects.Rationalist Govind Pansare and his wife Uma were shot at near their residence on February 15, 2015 while they were returning home from morning stroll.Pansare succumbed to his injuries on February 20. Police on September 15, 2015 arrested Sameer Gaikwad in connection with the case and filed chargesheet against him on December 14, 2015. The second accused in the case, identified as Virendrasingh Tawade, was arrested on September 2, 2016 and while filing supplementary chargesheet in the case, Vinay Pawar was named as third accused and Sarang Akolkar as fourth accused.Both Gaikwad and Tawade are currently out on bail.According to police sources, Pawar is missing since a blast at a trade centre in Madgaon on October 16, 2009. Though he was not booked in that case, he is missing since then. Pawar, along with Akolkar, had met one of the witnesses to get training to prepare weapons on the direction of Tawade.
