House owners to pay for mosquito breeding spots

Earlier, over 20 to 25 dengue suspects were found now hardly eight to 10 are spotted in sensitive areas. "Currently, there are 61 dengue suspects admitted in various hospitals. KOLHAPUR: The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation ( KMC ) is going to start penalizing owners and developers of buildings or apartments for letting water stagnate in the basements where mosquitoes causing dengue breed.The action will begin from Wednesday onwards. The seven-day drive to stop the spread of dengue will end next week on Tuesday along with the deadline of the show-cause notice issued to property owners and developers.The KMC is going to impose hefty fine in case the developers or the owners have neglected the advice to keep the basements and water storing containers dry.Vijay Patil, KMC chief sanitation inspector, said, "The number of dengue cases are going down. Earlier, over 20 to 25 dengue suspects were found now hardly eight to 10 are spotted in sensitive areas. The decline is due to the increased awareness among the citizens and precautions taken by them. We are going to stop the drive to visit each and every home and check out the containers for the presence of mosquito breeding as we have covered every house during last six days."Currently, there are 61 dengue suspects admitted in various hospitals. The civic authorities claim that most of them are high fever patients and are yet to be confirmed for dengue.Out of 61, the KMC has tested blood samples of 30 patients have found three confirmed cases of dengue. Civic staff of over 200 staff was involved in the drive carried out after sudden outbreak of dengue cases reported from 33 sensitive areas."The number of cases reported in private hospitals have also been declined. As the rain started, most of the breeding sites have been destroyed. However, citizens should be cautioned about the water collecting in the back side of the refrigerators where the chances of breeding of the mosquito are high. We expect that the rainfall will continue as if it stops for a couple of days, the cases of dengue may go up once again," Patil added.
