Policemen hurt, shops forced to shut as protesters turn violent

KOLHAPUR: Protesters turned violent in Satara during the bandh called on Wednesday, pelting stones at the policemen and vandalising shops along the Pune-Bengaluru national highway.Protesters had stalled traffic on the national highway in Satara for more than two hours. Around 10 policemen, including Satara's superintendent of police Sandip Patil, were injured in the stone pelting. The mob also targeted shops and business complexes on the highway.The police fired around 20 tear gas shells and resorted to lathi charge to disperse the mob. Police have detained 30 protesters for their hand in the stone pelting."We brought the situation under control within half an hour, but as a precautionary measure we stopped traffic for more than one and half hour to avoid any untoward incident. The situation is under control and police are keeping a check across the district," said Patil.He added that the policemen are busy conducting panchnama and recording the damage done during the violence in Satara city and district on Wednesday.Protesters had also gathered at the Rajwada area in Satara and walked to the district collectorate. They left after handing over the memorandum of their demands to Satara district collector."The protesters moved towards the national highway after the rally in the city and started pelting stones at vehicles on the road. A police van at the spot became their target. Following this, we sent an alert to all the police stations in the city and deployed additional force," said a police officer, requesting anonymity.Tension prevailed in Karad taluka, including the city, as protesters burned tyres and vandalised shops and hotels on the main roads. Information regarding the extent of damage is still being collated. According to sources, local MLA Shivendra Raje Bhosale was not allowed to address the rally by the protesters in the city.
