The water samples will be tested for concentration of nitrates, types of algae and biological oxygen demand of the water. We can't stop the flow of sewage water from nullahs as it may cause flooding in the area during heavy rains. The stink is also due to decomposition of dead fish and plants due to reduction in the oxygen content in the water. "The officials said the growth of algae has substantially reduced compared to last year. "Vyaghrambare said, "If the oxygen content of the lake water is increased by any means, for instance by boating, it will lead to decrease in the pollutants and thereby reduce the growth of algae.

KOLHAPUR: The civic body will study the reasons behind the growth of blue-green algae in the Rankala lake water, giving a greenish colour and foul smell.Civic chief Abhijeet Chaudhari on Tuesday asked environment officer Samir Vyaghrambare to get samples of the water tested. The growth of algae is mainly due to increase in the nitrate content in the sewage water overflowing from the nearby nullahs. Chaudhari said growth of algae is seen during this period of every year and the growth declines once the temperature starts rising in October. The heavy rains lead to overflowing of nullahs. The smaller nullahs have been attached to the Dudhali nullah which carries the sewage water further into Panchaganga.Chaudhari said, "The primary solution such as deploying boats in the lake to improve aeration has been suggested. We can't stop the flow of sewage water from nullahs as it may cause flooding in the area during heavy rains. I have asked the environment officer to suggest measures to stop the growth permanently and also consult experts and the environment department of Shivaji University for reliable measures."Vyaghrambare said, "If the oxygen content of the lake water is increased by any means, for instance by boating, it will lead to decrease in the pollutants and thereby reduce the growth of algae. The decline in the oxygen level leads to death of fish. The stink is also due to decomposition of dead fish and plants due to reduction in the oxygen content in the water."The officials said the growth of algae has substantially reduced compared to last year. The water samples will be tested for concentration of nitrates, types of algae and biological oxygen demand of the water. The samples has been collected from various spots in the lake spread over 200 acres.
