KOLHAPUR: A 35-year-old man allegedly killed his wife with a sharp-edged object after she refused to give him money for alcohol at Jainapur village in Shirol taluka on Tuesday. The incident has been registered with Jaysingpur police station.Police arrested the accused identified as Mahaveer Chougule on Tuesday.According to police, Mahaveer was married to Padmaja for 13 years and the couple has a 12-year-old son."Mahaveer is a liquor addict. He would usually beat his wife while being in inebriated condition. Padmaja used to work in a private office to provide for her family as her husband was unemployed due to his addiction to alcohol," said a police officer attached to Jaysingpur police station.Mahaveer would frequently demand money from his wife to drink liquor, police said."On Tuesday night, as usual, Mahaveer demanded money from Padmaja. But, this time she refused to give him money for liquor. After that, he tried to go out of house, but Padmaja obstructed him," police said."Enraged with this, Mahaveer took an iron rod from storeroom and hit his wife at her back, head and forehead," police said. "Padmaja's mother who was present at the spot intervened and snatched the rod from him.""As Padmaja was bleeding profusely, she was rushed to the government hospital in Sangli . She sccumbed to her injuries during the treatment," police said.Soon after her death, her mother Shobha Surgonda Patil lodged complaint at Jaysinghpur police station based on which police arrested Chougule."We have arrested Chougule under section 302 (murder) on IPC. We are gathering evidences in connection with the case and are investigating in details to ensure that the arrested gets convicted," said a senior police officer.
