Police fine 3,100 vehicle owners in drive against traffic violations

Kolhapur: In an eight day traffic drive launched in the city from October 2 to October 9, the city traffic police have taken action against 3114 vehicle owners for violating traffic rules and have collected fines worth Rs6,36,100 from them.Anil Gujar, police inspector in-charge of the city traffic department said, “Following the instructions issued by the superintendent of police, Abhinav Deshmukh, we had launched a traffic drive in the city from October 2 to October 9.”“The tendency of bikers to park their vehicles on the side of road has increased and this leads to traffic jams. We had received complaints about this from a number of people. We have also received complaints about youths driving vehicles at high speeds, which can lead to accidents taking place. Following this, we received instructions to launch the drive. It was a surprise decision taken by the traffic department to launch a drive at various chowks and traffic signals on major roads in the city,” he said.“During our drive, the maximum number of cases were of youths riding triple seat. As many as 494 bikers were found riding triple seat. 342 persons were found talking on the cellphone while riding. 227 motorcycles were found without appropriate number plates as per the rules. 15 youths were found to be riding motorcycles despite not being 18 years of age,” he said.“During our surprise checks at night, we found 25 persons riding vehicles under the influence of alcohol,” he added.“Taking help of the CCTV cameras installed at various traffic signals in the city, we have taken action against 859 persons jumping signals and violating other traffic rules. Since January 2018 to date we have taken action against 11,027 vehicle owners for violating traffic rules with the help of CCTV cameras,” he said.
