Kolhapur: The district and sessions court on Wednesday sentenced a 42-year-old teacher to life imprisonment for raping a minor girl studying in a zilla parishad school in Kolhapur district in 2011.The court, presided over by A U Kadam, also imposed a fine of Rs1,000 on him Pandurang Shamrao Shivane, failure to pay which will mean additional three months of simple imprisonment.The teacher was held guilty under section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Indian Penal Code.According to the prosecution, the convict was working as a teacher and the girl studying in Class IV in the primary school. On the afternoon of July 11, 2011, Shivane asked the girl to come to to school on the pretext of cleaning some classrooms. When she arrived, he took her to a classroom, closed the door and windows and raped her.The convict committed the ghastly act again on July 13 and July 15. He then gave her some cash and told her not to disclose the matter to anyone.On July 15, the complained of pain in her stomach when her parents returned home after completing work in a field. She soon narrated the entire incident to her parents, who rushed to police and lodged a complaint, following which the teacher was arrested and charged.A total of nine witnesses were examined during the trial.
