Citizens’ forum threatens to take to streets over water issue

The KMC’s water tankers had to make 42 trips to various parts of the city on Tuesday.The civic officials have said that the daily water supply will start on Thursday. “We will ensure that daily water supply is resumed from Thursday. It is expected to be completed by Wednesday evening, following which normal water supply to areas such as Kasba Bawada, Tarabai Park, Nagala Park and Kawala Naka will be resumed. Until then, we have deployed additional tankers as well as staff to manage the water supply, so that citizens do not suffer.”Work on the water damaged pipelined at the Khanwilkar petrol station started on Tuesday morning. Earlier, they changed the schedule, thus reducing the supply to B ward.

Kolhapur: The citizens’ forum from B ward on Tuesday threatened to take to the streets if the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation ( KMC ) fails to restore normal water supply within a day.Citizens suffering from water cuts in other wards are also likely to vent their anger against the civic administration over poor crisis management.As the alternate day water supply entered the sixth day, the citizens are losing patience. The KMC’s water tankers had to make 42 trips to various parts of the city on Tuesday.The civic officials have said that the daily water supply will start on Thursday. Damage to the main water supply pipeline has added to their worries as it has cut off the supply to most parts of E ward.Kisan Kalyankar, convener of the B ward forum, Anyay Nivaran Samiti, said the KMC had promised to provide adequate water even though the supply is for once in two days.“It, however, seems that the civic officials have forgotten their promise. Earlier, they changed the schedule, thus reducing the supply to B ward. And now, the alternate day water supply has made the lives of citizens of the ward more difficult,” he added.The civic officials claimed that snag in the Shingapur pumping station has forced the administration to initiate alternate day water supply and that all efforts are being made to complete the repair work as soon as possible.Suresh Kulkarni, chief hydraulic engineer of KMC, said the work on the transformer supplying power to the pumping station will be complete in the next one day. “We will ensure that daily water supply is resumed from Thursday.
