Last day to register for voting as 2month drive set to end

Kolhapur: The two-month-long drive to enrol new voters that started on September 1 will end on Wednesday.The district administration on Tuesday appealed to the youth to enrol their names in the voters list and get the right to vote in the upcoming elections. Out of 1.24 lakh youth between age 18 years and 19 years, only 47,000 have been registered. Largest number of offline applications has come from Kagal constituency.

Kolhapur: The two-month-long drive to enrol new voters that started on September 1 will end on Wednesday.The district administration on Tuesday appealed to the youth to enrol their names in the voters list and get the right to vote in the upcoming elections. The drive that started on September 1 was also for corrections to be made regarding specific details of the voters, change the address of residence and facilitate enrolment of non-resident Indians (NRIs).Details of total number of youths who approached to enrol in the list will be declared at the end of the exercise. District collector and district election officer Avinash Subhedar is supervising the drive. The new voters can register through online mode or by approaching the district election office with relevant documents such as residential proof and birth certificate.According to the primary estimates, 65,000 applications have been received through online and offline mode to register as voter and to make changes in the electoral roll.A senior district official, requesting anonymity, said, “Largest number of online applications has come from Kolhapur north and south constituencies. Largest number of offline applications has come from Kagal constituency. After scrutinising the names will be published in the electoral rolls and which will be displayed in the offices located in respective constituencies.”Subhedar had made it mandatory for government employees to register themselves in the voters list and had warned that they will face salary cut if their names do not appear in the final list.According to the officials, around 60% of young voters have not registered for voting. Out of 1.24 lakh youth between age 18 years and 19 years, only 47,000 have been registered.
