Broken pipeline weak supply add to water woes

KOLHAPUR: The civic administration faced the wrath of the citizens and corporators, who alleged improper management of water supply.The alternate-day water supply is in place since last Friday and on the fourth day, the citizens started feeling acute scarcity. The repair work to fix the broken line will be carried out on Tuesday, water supply department officials said.Suresh Kulkarni, chief hydraulic engineer of KMC, said, “We have deployed adequate number of water tankers. We had asked officials of Rajarampuri divisional ward office to send water tankers, however it did not arrive. It may take additional couple of days to complete the repair work and the alternate-day supply would be extended.Citizens were left inconvenienced owing to the delays in water tankers reaching some places.

The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials claimed that they have increased the duration of supply, but there is a dip in the water supply by 30%.The pumps at Shinganapur pumping station are shut owing to technical issues and work is on to fix them. The officials have assured the corporators that the water supply would be back to normal in a week. It may take additional couple of days to complete the repair work and the alternate-day supply would be extended.Citizens were left inconvenienced owing to the delays in water tankers reaching some places. Many localities did not get the tankers at all despite repeated requests.Ashok Suryawanshi, resident of Rajarampuri, said they got water supply only for an hour on Monday morning and at low pressure. It is the most populous part of E ward. “Hardly three to four buckets of water were filled. We had asked officials of Rajarampuri divisional ward office to send water tankers, however it did not arrive. On Sunday or holidays, we can wait for some time for the water tankers, however the delay on Monday caused inconvenience to us,” he said.Citizens in E ward have been cautious about using water. Residents of E ward, especially from Kawala Naka, Temblaiwadi, Kasba Bawda and Nagala Park, will have to face continuous water cuts for next three days as the pipeline supplying water to these areas has been damaged at Khanwilkar Petrol Pump.The KMC had undertaken the work to make a drain, however, while digging the water supply pipeline has been damaged. The repair work to fix the broken line will be carried out on Tuesday, water supply department officials said.Suresh Kulkarni, chief hydraulic engineer of KMC, said, “We have deployed adequate number of water tankers. Every area from where a demand has been made has been provided with one. There might be delays for some time, however, water was provided to the residential societies from 30 odd localities.”Corporators are going to meet civic officials on Tuesday and tell them about the flaws in the system and to get it corrected immediately.
